Where did you go on vacations as a child?
Our vacations were always to visit family. We went to Salmon, Idaho moslty. My sister Selma and her family lived there. I remember trips in the summer and winter. Going to the hotsprings pool with snow all around. I learned to swim there and watch my dad sit where the hot water entered the pool. Whew! way to hot for me. I remember visiting the farm where my mom grew up. You had to cross a rickety wooden bridge over a small creek to get to the house. I used to worry that it may not hold us. I could imagine my mother riding a horse down that lane to go to school. George Stoddard, Selma's husband, had a bee hive in the shed behind their house. We knew to keep our distance but he did have a glass beehive in the house where we could watch the bees working in the honey comb. Out their back yard and across the street was a family with kids we would go to play with. There were half round wagon wheels that made a sort of fence in the front yard. There was a girl my age. They were close friends with Selma and George and later, their son, Scott Benton, lived with George and Selma at Rick's College the same time I was there. We became close friends. When we first met, we would stay up past midnight just talking. More than once Selma and George would hollar out at us to get to bed. Scot played the guitar and we would sign together. He was a close and immediate friend. Back to Salmon, I loved walking down to the country store and getting some penny candy. I was in awe of this option and usually only had a penny or two to spend. One time on a wintery trip to Salmon, we slid into the guard rail and almost fell into a ravine. It was frightening but we prayed and someone came along to pull us back on the road. On summer trips, there was a spring we would stop at not too far before Salmon where we would rest and get a good drink before the final leg of our trip.
Each August/September during huckleberry season, we would drive up to Syble and Leonald's ranch near Kettle Falls, WA. I loved visiting here. So many rich memories. I will list them here and come back to write more about each one.
